NEW TO WINCHESTER?

Winchester is, one of the smallest cities in England and is rich in history, having many evidences of its role over the country. (Its small size means it can be easily explored on foot). It is the ancient capital of Wessex before the change to London. It is famed for the presence of King Alfred who notoriously burnt the cakes (at a location in the Somerset levels) while planning a successful battle against the Danes. A prominent and imposing statue in the Broadway is a reminder of his association with the city where he died in AD 899 and was buried.

Present day Winchester has much to attract visitors, including the renowned Cathedral, the Great Hall of the Castle, ruins of Wolvesey Palace, the Hospital at St. Cross, and the famous College and the water meadows of the river Itchen are a good place for a stroll in the summer months. There are remains of the city wall and the Westgate tower still stands at the top of the High St.

Guide books of Wincester itself, and also some of the historic buildings, are available at the Tourist Information Centre which is located in the Guildhall, just a short distance from The Welcome Gospel Hall.
